Man and Van Prices: How to Get a Fair Quote

A man and van is the simplest way to move a small amount of furniture, a studio flat or a few large items. It is also one of the services where quotes vary most, because there is no single standard way to price it. This guide explains what drives the price and how to compare quotes properly.

How man and van quotes work

Most quotes are built in one of two ways.

  • Hourly rate. You pay for the time the van and crew are with you, usually with a minimum number of hours. This is common for local jobs and means that how long the job takes matters.
  • Fixed price. The company agrees a price for the whole job based on what you have told them. This can be easier to budget with, but it only works if your description is accurate.

Some companies add charges for mileage or fuel, and some charge for time between jobs. Always ask how the price is made up.

What affects the price

  • The amount you are moving. A van load of boxes is quicker than a flat full of furniture.
  • The distance, and the time it takes to drive between addresses.
  • The number of people. One person with a van, or a driver plus a helper, make a big difference to how quickly bulky items move.
  • Access. Stairs without a lift, narrow hallways and long carries from the parking space all add time.
  • Heavy or awkward items. Wardrobes, sofas, washing machines and large mattresses may need extra hands.
  • Parking and charges. In some cities you may be asked to cover congestion or parking charges.
  • Timing. Weekends, month ends and bank holidays are busier.
  • Extras. Dismantling and rebuilding furniture, wrapping and packing materials can be priced separately.

Check what is included

Quotes only compare fairly if they cover the same things. Before you choose, check:

  • Is loading and unloading included, or is it driving only?
  • How many people are included?
  • Is there a minimum charge or a minimum number of hours?
  • Are fuel, mileage and parking included?
  • Is the quote fixed or an estimate?
  • Is there goods in transit insurance, and what does it cover?

If one quote is far cheaper than the rest, it is often because it leaves something out.

How to get an accurate quote

The more precisely you describe the job, the more accurate the quote, and the less likely you are to face a bill that is higher than expected.

  • List the items, and note anything large or heavy.
  • Give both addresses and the floor you are on at each end.
  • Say whether there is a lift and where the van can park.
  • Say whether you will help with the lifting.
  • Give the date and the time window you need.

Photographs of large items help too.

Man and van or a removal company?

A man and van is a good fit for small moves, such as a studio flat, a student room, a few items or a delivery. If you are moving a whole house, have many fragile items or need packing, a full removal company is usually a better choice. Our guide to man and van vs full removals helps you decide.

Tips for the day

  • Have everything packed and ready before the van arrives. Time spent waiting is time you may pay for.
  • Disassemble what you can in advance.
  • Keep valuables and documents with you.
  • Agree a contact number and arrival window with the driver.

Frequently asked questions

Is a man and van cheaper than a removal company?

It can be for small jobs, but not always. For a larger move, a full removal company with a bigger crew may be quicker and better value. The only way to know is to get quotes for your actual job.

Do I need to help with the lifting?

Some drivers work alone and expect you to help, while others come with a helper. Tell companies whether you will lift when you ask for quotes, because it changes what they price.

Can a man and van move a whole flat?

If what you are moving fits in one or two loads, yes. If there is a lot of furniture, ask whether it needs more trips or a bigger vehicle, and how that affects the quote.

Do man and van services have insurance?

Many do, but the cover varies a lot. Ask whether they hold goods in transit and public liability insurance, and what each covers.
